A New Release Checklist for Self-Published Authors
Publishing a new book is exciting, but the final days before release can become rushed. With files to upload, prices to set, and promotions to prepare, it is easy to overlook a small detail that affects the reader’s experience.
A simple checklist helps self-published authors slow down, review the essentials, and give every new release a professional start.
Complete the Final Proofreading Pass
Read the finished manuscript one more time after editing and formatting. Look for typos, missing words, repeated phrases, punctuation problems, and inconsistent character or place names.
Proofreading the formatted file is important because new problems can appear during conversion. Check chapter headings, page breaks, paragraph spacing, italics, scene breaks, and the table of contents.
Review the Cover and Book Details
Make sure the title, subtitle, author name, and series information match everywhere they appear. Compare the cover with the copyright page, retailer listing, and promotional materials.
Review the book description carefully. It should be clear, appealing, and free from errors. Confirm the selected categories, keywords, publication date, price, and age range if applicable.
Test the Final Book File
Preview the eBook on more than one screen size when possible. Check that the table of contents works, images display correctly, and chapters begin in the right places.
For print editions, use the retailer’s preview tool and order a proof copy if time allows. Examine margins, page numbers, headers, blank pages, image quality, and the cover alignment before approving the book.
Check Links and Back Matter
Test every link in the manuscript, especially links to your website, newsletter signup page, social profiles, and other books. Outdated or broken links can waste an opportunity to stay connected with readers.
Your back matter should also guide readers toward the next step. Include an author bio, a request for an honest review, and information about another title or upcoming release when appropriate.
Prepare the Promotion
Gather the correct sales link, book cover, short description, longer description, formats, price, categories, and review quotes. Keeping these details together makes it easier to create social posts, newsletters, advertisements, and promotion submissions.
Double-check the release date and any temporary sale dates before scheduling promotional content. A polished campaign cannot help if it sends readers to the wrong link or lists an expired price.
Give Your New Release a Strong Start
No checklist can guarantee sales or positive reviews, but careful preparation prevents avoidable problems. When the book file, listing, links, and promotional materials are ready, readers receive a smoother and more professional experience from the first click.
