A rare book goes into the safe at R&C Booksellers on a Thursday afternoon. Friday morning the man who brought it is dead in the stockroom, and the book is gone.
Walter Pruitt checked the front windows before he set it on the counter. Jess Hollis photographed it, logged it, and put it away overnight as a favor. He has bought two hundred dollars of books from her in six years.
The alley door is locked. She wants that on the record. Detective Fletcher has a dead man in a locked building and no forced entry. Somebody used a door that does not latch unless you lift the handle a quarter inch, which everybody in the building already knows how to do.
