The Pirate and the Princess is an alternate history pirate romance. The year is 1853. After the Mexican-American War, California decides to become an independent kingdom and Oregon chooses to be an independent republic.

The King of California goes mad. His daughter, Princess Sophia, is chosen as regent to rule in his stead until the king recovers.

All is well. Sophia is a good ruler and California prospers, but the barons don’t like taking orders from a woman. There are several plots under way to dethrone Sophia.

Enter the Dread Pirate Duncan. His ship is badly battered in a storm, and he needs to put into San Diego to affect repairs.

Sophia goes into the weekly market, disguised, to take the temperature of her kingdom.

Duncan meets a peasant lass in the market, and it’s love at first sight.

However, Sophia doesn’t know that Duncan is a pirate and Duncan doesn’t know that Sophia is a princess. It can never work.

Sophia is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Despite his being cast aside by Sophia, Duncan sails to her rescue.

Can the two find a happy ending?
