He was recovering from a horribly disfiguring accident that nearly took his life when his Uncle Dexter Farnsworth passed away. Jack Jackson inherited the Mystic Gypsy, a long-since-played-out gold mine. He had no idea the tunnels of the mine were portals to other times and places. The mine came with a warning from his recently passed great uncle to avoid the lower tunnels. Curiosity killed the cat, and it wouldn't be doing Jack any favors either.
